Why we do it
We are at a pivotal moment in our collective battle against climate change. Within a short span of time, we must reverse the damage caused by centuries of reliance on fossil fuels. This fight necessitates an unprecedented infrastructure revolution in the form of carbon removal projects, which actively remove carbon dioxide from our atmosphere.
However, these critical carbon removal projects currently face significant barriers in accessing the necessary financing. The financing process is time-consuming, the terms can be exploitative, and a substantial portion of the funds often gets absorbed by intermediaries instead of benefiting the projects or local communities.
Opna is dedicated to eliminating these obstacles by providing high-quality carbon removal projects with the vital early and scaling financing they require. Our aim is to reduce carbon emissions, revitalize communities, and preserve biodiversity, ultimately creating a thriving and sustainable future.

Founding story
Opna was founded in Feb 2022 by Shilpika Gautam, a Guinness world record-breaking climate advocate with 15+ years of experience in Carbon Markets, building commodities, capital markets, and fintech businesses for startups and global financial institutions.
For Shilps, Opna is not only a natural extension of her experience across tech, financial services, and climate, but also presents a needle-moving opportunity to build a just, thriving, and healthy low-carbon economy.
With her roots in India and her climate advocacy work in the Global south, climate change is a living, ever-present, and personal experience for Shilps. Drawing from both her personal experiences and her professional background, Shilps strongly believes that corporations possess the capacity, responsibility, and financial resources required to drive our transition towards a more sustainable future. Through Opna, Shilps aims to facilitate the allocation of upstream capital, raising the standards of carbon markets while simultaneously reducing barriers to entry, thereby allowing everyone to actively participate in the low-carbon economy.
